What Drives the Silver Price?
Silver pricing is influenced by both investment demand and industrial applications. Unlike gold, which is primarily a monetary metal, silver has significant industrial use in electronics, solar panels, medical devices, and photography. This dual nature means silver prices respond to both economic growth indicators and safe-haven demand.
The LBMA Silver Price is the global benchmark, set once daily at noon London time. This benchmark replaced the historic London Silver Fix in 2014 and is administered by ICE Benchmark Administration. It serves as the reference price for mining companies, refiners, central banks, and institutional investors worldwide.
How We Source Silver Price Data
Live Gold Prices displays real-time silver spot prices delivered via a streaming feed from OWNx, a U.S.-based precious metals dealer and custodian. Prices update continuously during market hours and reflect current bid pricing in the global spot market.
Historical performance data (7-day, 30-day, 6-month, 1-year, 5-year, and 20-year lookbacks) are sourced from LBMA PM (Evening) fixing prices via the Xignite GlobalMetals API. For full details, see our Sources page.
Gold-Silver Ratio
The gold-silver ratio measures how many ounces of silver it takes to purchase one ounce of gold. This ratio is closely watched by precious metals investors as a measure of relative value between the two metals. Historically, the ratio has averaged around 60:1 to 70:1, though it has ranged from below 20:1 to over 100:1 during periods of extreme market stress.
Silver as an Investment
Silver offers investors a more affordable entry point into precious metals compared to gold. Its higher price volatility means silver can deliver larger percentage gains during bull markets, but also steeper losses during downturns. Physical silver is available in coins, bars, and rounds, while paper silver can be accessed through ETFs, futures contracts, and mining stocks.
